Day 12 – Final Year Project

Today lecture was about “Final Year Project.” At the beginning of the lecture, Mr Eranjan explained how important final year project for a student. Basically final year project is an individual project based on a business problem which cannot be hypothetical and should be completed within nine months. As for the solution students have to come up with a software solution that solves the identified problem. With the proposed software solution students have to submit a document which includes problem statement, proposed solution, research details, literature review, and critical evaluations.

Steps to initiate a final year project
·        Draft Proposal.
·        Specification Form.
·        Project Plan.

After choosing a business problem it should be checked using a criterion for continuation. A project should be always,

·        Feasible - e.g. can it be completed in the time available?
·        Useful - e.g. will it result in a useable model or method?
·        Balanced - e.g. a mix of qualitative and quantitative material.

Furthermore Mr Eranjan explained steps in writing the final year project. Following are some important facts specified by Mr Eranjan regarding that area,

·        Identify the area of study - and the importance of the subject.
·        Specify the objectives of the project.
·        Describe your intended methodology and any underlying assumptions.
·        Explain the value of possible outcomes.
·        Identify a preliminary timetable for the project.

After that Mr Eranjan concluded the session. As homework he told class members to think of a business problem and also to checkout some BIT final year projects in the library to get some rough idea.

Reflection of today's lecture

Today session was important for us because we are really close to our final year project. Today I learnt basic things about final year project. While discussing about the final year project, I understtod that most important thing is to identify a real business problem in a real organization. After identifying a business problem, there are many phases we have to go through until presenting the solution. Overall today was like a warm-up for the final year project. Today session also helped us to clear any issues regarding FYP. I felt that it was an effective session for all of us.
