Day 13 – Final Year Project Continue..

Today lecture was a continuation of the previous lecture, final year project. At the start Mr Eranjan asked class members about their thoughts about business problems. After discussing some of business problems Mr Eranjan continued the session.

Main aspect of the final year project is the problem. Without a realistic business problem there won’t be a successful final year project. So Mr Eranjan emphasised how important is to select a suitable problem. There are few steps that can carried out in order to find a good idea,
  • What are you interested in?
  • What are the “flavours of the month” in computing magazines/journals?
  • What modules have you enjoyed?
  • What area do you want to get a job in?
  • What grade are you realistically aiming for?

By evaluating these steps any one can identify an area with a problem. After that Mr Eranjan also explained how to write a problem statement which is important in FYP.

Next Mr Eranjan spoke about the project proposal. A good proposal should include,
  • Identify the area of study - and the importance of the subject
  • Specify the objectives of the project
  • Describe your intended methodology and any underlying assumptions
  • Explain the value of possible outcomes
  • Identify a preliminary timetable for the project
Then Mr Eranjan explained how to write a good project title which indicates proposed solution for a particular problem. The format should be as follows,

Investigation into [research area] to develop [what type of system] for [company name].

Finally he discussed about the content of the documentation. Basically following topics should be included in the final document,

  • Abstract.
  • Introduction.
  • Body.
  • Conclusions.
  • List of references quoted in the text.
  • Bibliography.
  • Appendices.

The lecture was concluded by having a discussion about Critical evaluation which played a vital part in the lecture.

Reflection of today's lecture

Today was an interesting lecture. Today learnt about several things regarding FYP. Especially about how to write a problem statement. Then also learned how to write a project objective. Also today lecture showed me how important is project proposal as it gives first impression about the FYP. Everything discussed in today lecture was so important. I believe that these learning’s will help me to complete my FYP successfully.
